Hospira Withers and Peters Fellowship Prizes

The Hospira Withers and Peters Fellowship Prize is available to student members or Fellows of the College who have passed their Part II examination and are employed as a Fellow or Registrar in an accredited department. The purpose of the prize is to promote a culture of radiation oncology research among Fellows of the college, by supporting our most able and committed young researchers to carry out significant research projects.

There is more information on Hospira Withers and Peters Fellowship Prize in the FAQs section, or you can read a detailed background to the award in the December 2008 edition of Inside News on page 38.

Applications must be submitted by the end of April . Late applications cannot be accepted.
For more information contact: research@ranzcr.edu.au

Oncura Bourne and Langlands Prize

The Oncura Bourne and Langlands Prize will be available annually to trainees whose research requirement submission is deemed to be outstanding.

The assessment of trainee research requirement submissions has previously been two tiered with trainees awarded a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory. At a recent review the FRC and the Education Board felt that excellence was not being recognised or rewarded. Each submission will now be graded as unsatisfactory, satisfactory or outstanding. Any submissions graded as outstanding will automatically be considered for the prize.

It is hoped that the establishment of this prize will provide candidates with a greater incentive for excellence, and a sense of achievement. The prize will only be awarded in the case of an exceptional submission.

RANZCR Research Grants

The purpose of the RANZCR Research grants is to provide research experience for Fellows, Educational Affiliates and student members of the College.

When the primary applicant is a student member of the RANZCR, a Fellow of the RANZCR should also be listed as accepting some responsibility for supervising the primary applicant.

Unnecessary CT Scans
Dr Matthew Andrews, President of RANZCR has endorsed the concerns raised by Dr Tony Webber, Director of Medicare’s Professional Services Review, about the inappropriate use of CT scans.

However, Dr Andrews said that this concern about CT should not be about blaming doctors. He said that Radiologists are always concerned to minimise all risks including radiation risks to patients from ionising imaging examinations;
