Trainor/Owen Collection

Instruments Used in Surgery and Medicine (1897)

From the Brady & Martin Catalogue

The Trainor/Owen Collection is named after JP Trainor (1890-1971), a pioneer Australian manufacturer of X-ray and electromedical apparatus, and Dr Morris Owen (1917-2004), radiologist and long-serving Keeper of the Archives. The Archive is supported by the JP Trainor Archive Trust.

The major holdings of the collection include:
  • RANZCR administrative records such as:
    • Council and Executive Minutes and Agendas (1935 to date )
    • Education Board Minutes and Agendas (1946 to date )
    • Annual reports (1935 to date )
    • Correspondence files (1947-1973)
    • Selected Branch minutes and correspondence files (1935-1989).
  • Personal papers:
    • Dr James Syme (1935-1991)
    • Dr Robert Gardner (1923-1957)
    • Dr Roy Sear (1909-1962)
    • Dr Jim Ryan (1963-2004)
    • Dr DG Maitland (1900-1970)
    • Dr Charles Augustus Edwards (1852-1929)
    • Dr Robert Augustin Gardner (1892-1963)
  • Copy of Röntgen’s original report of his discovery
  • Apparatus including X-ray machines, glass tubes, goggles and meters
  • X-rays – human and veterinary
  • Medals, photographs and postage stamps
  • Rare books such as Morton, WJ The X-Ray or Photography of the Invisible (New York, 1896)

 

 

 

60th anniversary of the College

At the Combined Scientific Meeting in Brisbane in October 2009, a special archive display was set up to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the College. The items from the display can be viewed here.

The Trainor/Owen Collection is open by appointment on Wednesday from 9 am – 4.30 pm (by appointment).

Update on Australasian Implementation of MRI Conditional Pacemaker
The first MRI-conditional pacemaker, the Medtronic 'Advisa DR MRI Surescan', was launched on the Australian market at the end of April. It is understood that about 100 units have already been implanted.
Passenger Airport Screening Technologies
ARPANSA has recently released a fact sheet providing information on radiation risks associated with the recently introduced Passenger Airport Screening Technologies.
Unnecessary CT Scans
Dr Matthew Andrews, President of RANZCR has endorsed the concerns raised by Dr Tony Webber, Director of Medicare’s Professional Services Review, about the inappropriate use of CT scans.

However, Dr Andrews said that this concern about CT should not be about blaming doctors. He said that Radiologists are always concerned to minimise all risks including radiation risks to patients from ionising imaging examinations;
