The Faculty Education Board had its first face to face meeting for 2007 on Friday 16 March 2007.

Accredited Sites
The Chief Accreditation Officer, A/Prof Graham Stevens continues to be busy with accreditation site visits.  The following training sites have been reaccredited:

  • Canberra Hospital (partial accreditation)
  • Mater Hospital Brisbane (partial accreditation)
  • Royal Brisbane Hospital (partial accreditation)
  • Princess Alexandra Hospital (partial accreditation)

Examiners
The Faculty Education Board has recently appointed the following members as Provisional Part II Examiners:

  • Dr Shalini Vinod
  • Dr Anne Capp
  • Dr J Jayamohan
  • Dr Michael Back
  • Dr Jonathan Zwi (Pathologist)

Dr Martin Borg has recently stepped down as Chief Anatomy Examiner, a role which will now be filled by Dr David Christie.  The Education Board extends its appreciation to Dr Borg for his efforts.

Expressions of Interest
Expressions of Interest are sought from Fellows with an interest in becoming a Part I Examiner.  The Closing date for applications is 31 May 2007.  Anyone interested should contact Sharon Bentley, Faculty Education Officer for more information.

CE Eddy Prize 2006
Dr Louis Lao of Auckland has been awarded the CE Eddy Prize for 2006, as the most outstanding candidate in the Part I Exams.  Dr Lao will be presented with his award at the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) in 2007.  Congratulations Dr Lao!

Curriculum Development Project
Curriculum writing is continuing, with many content areas currently under review.  The drafts for each content area will continue to be refined through this consultation process.  Work has begun on identifying learning outcomes and consideration is being given to issues relating to the structure of the training program and methods of assessment.

Trainees are reminded of the requirements to submit their statistics assignment twelve months prior to sitting the Part II Exams, and their research requirement six months prior to sitting the Part II Exams.

Part II Preparation Course
The Part II Preparation Course is being organized by Dr J Jayamohan and Dr L Perera, and will be held Friday 27 – Saturday 28 April 2007 at Westmead Hospital, Sydney.  This course is designed for Radiation Oncology trainees who expect to sit Part II examinations in following year.  There will be presentations from examiners, previous candidates, interactive essay sessions as well as short cases, pathology and planning vivas.  Registration forms and further details will be available shortly.  Registrars who will be attending are asked to email amyjhayden@gmail.com to indicate their interest.

Supervisor of Training (SoT) Meeting
The next Supervisor of Training (SoT) meeting is due to be held on Friday 22 June, more details will be provided closer to the date.

Pathway for Admission to Fellowship for Long Standing Educational Affiliates
A new process leading to College Fellowship is currently under review for those radiologists and radiation oncologists (usually being College Educational Affiliates) who obtained their specialist qualifications overseas and who already have either: (i) full specialist recognition (specialist registration in Australia); or (ii) registration within a vocational scope of practice (in New Zealand).
TGA Alert: Serious adverse events identified in Queensland with the use of Peripherally Inserted Cen
The TGA has issued a web alert in relation to a particular peripherally-inserted Central Venous Catheter (PICC) following complications reported in a small number of cases in Queensland when parts of a guide wire used to install the device remained within the patient.
Australian Government Funding to Practices for Quality Initiatives
Minister Roxon has advised the College that funds underspent at the expiry of the MoUs for Radiology, Cardiac Imaging, Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound and Nuclear Imaging will be reimbursed to practices through a new Diagnostic Imaging Quality Practice Program.
