Branch Information

The QLD Branch RANZCR holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July and a General Meeting in February/March each year open to all QLD Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Oncology Fellows.


Branch Office Bearers and Councilors are elected at the AGM with Committee meetings held approximately three times per year to coincide with Federal Council Meetings and Branch Chair/Executive Meeting.


The Branch Education Officer overviews the QLD state-wide Radiology Registrar Training Program, with the QLD Radiology Training Network Committee. There are two main metropolitan Registrar training locations at the Princess Alexandra and Royal Brisbane Hospitals, but also rotating to the Mater, Logan Royal and Mater Children's Hospitals and Greenslopes Private Hospital. Non-metropolitan training rotations include the Gold Coast, Nambour, Redcliffe, Ipswich, Caboolture and Townsville Hospitals.


One weekend each year a CME Accredited QLD Branch Annual Scientific Meeting is held, except in those years when the RANZCR ASM is in Queensland.


The Branch Chairman also regularly attends the Communications & Membership Portfolio teleconferences, QLD Council of Medical Specialist Colleges, AMAQ QLD Combined College Chairs Meetings and other Qhealth meetings.

Branch Awards

The Branch also provides three awards each year - the Uhr-Clarke Bursary to QLD RANZCR Student Members and two Hugo Flecker Memorial Prizes (one for Radiology and Radiation Oncology) to QUT Applied Science Students.

  1. Uhr-Clarke Bursary to the most successful QLD Part II exam candidate in Radiodiagnosis or Radiation Oncology. The candidate is chosen by the Chief Censors and $5,000 (from 2009 inclusive) is provided to assist the Registrar to attend an accredited overseas conference or fellowship.
  2. Hugo Flecker Memorial Prizes - QUT Bachelor of Applied Science Medical Radiation Technology: in Medical Imaging, or Radiotherapy. The total award is $1,000 (from 2009 inclusive), so that usually with 2 awardees, each will receive $500. The academic prize is for Radiography and Radiation Oncology Technology, QUT Degree Candidates in the final year.

Update on Australasian Implementation of MRI Conditional Pacemaker
The first MRI-conditional pacemaker, the Medtronic 'Advisa DR MRI Surescan', was launched on the Australian market at the end of April. It is understood that about 100 units have already been implanted.
Passenger Airport Screening Technologies
ARPANSA has recently released a fact sheet providing information on radiation risks associated with the recently introduced Passenger Airport Screening Technologies.
Unnecessary CT Scans
Dr Matthew Andrews, President of RANZCR has endorsed the concerns raised by Dr Tony Webber, Director of Medicare’s Professional Services Review, about the inappropriate use of CT scans.

However, Dr Andrews said that this concern about CT should not be about blaming doctors. He said that Radiologists are always concerned to minimise all risks including radiation risks to patients from ionising imaging examinations;
