The Standards of Medical Practice Committee was established in 1998 as
a Committee of Council in response to requests from the Diagnostic Economic
Committee and Radiology Education Board to act on behalf of the RANZCR
to advise on issues involving Professional Standards of Practice in Diagnostic
Imaging and interventional Radiology.
It was envisaged that this Committee would be particularly useful in
the area of assisting with Standards of Practice when the Commonwealth
Department of Health, the HIC and the Department of Veterans Affairs require
advice.
Over the course of this year the Committee has provided advice on several
matters regarding the appropriateness of practice. A recurring theme from
the issues examined has been the need for clear and open discussion with
the patient where the patient perceives that a mistake or adverse incident
has occurred.
The membership comprises a core committee including a current Councillor,
an Education Board and an Accreditation Guidelines & Quality Committee
representative.
