About the South Pacific Liaison Reference Group

The South Pacific Liaison Reference group aims to provide and support radiology education in the nations of the South Pacific.

The Group usually meets at the Colleges Annual Scientific Meeting where the committee welcomes attendance of everyone interested in radiology education in the South Pacific.

News

There is always need for educators to travel to interesting South Pacific Island to teach plain film reporting, ultrasound, and interventional techniques. The only problem is funding. Most volunteers need to be self funded. Some of the corporate radiology practices may be willing to fund a one or two week trip.

College Members interested in joining the South Pacific Liaison Reference Group can email Dr Peter Scally, p.scally@uq.edu.au. New members are always welcome.

What services are provided?
Educational visits to Fiji, Tonga, Western Samoa, and the Solomon Islands.

South Pacific Liaison Group Special Projects, Awards.
The group is working with the WHO and is the lead group in planning and running an education course in Fiji for radiographers in the South Pacific.

What are the external bodies the group liaises with?
The World Health Organisation and the steering committee of the Radiology Centres of Excellence, RSNA, ECR, and ISR.

Update on Australasian Implementation of MRI Conditional Pacemaker
The first MRI-conditional pacemaker, the Medtronic 'Advisa DR MRI Surescan', was launched on the Australian market at the end of April. It is understood that about 100 units have already been implanted.
Passenger Airport Screening Technologies
ARPANSA has recently released a fact sheet providing information on radiation risks associated with the recently introduced Passenger Airport Screening Technologies.
Unnecessary CT Scans
Dr Matthew Andrews, President of RANZCR has endorsed the concerns raised by Dr Tony Webber, Director of Medicare’s Professional Services Review, about the inappropriate use of CT scans.

However, Dr Andrews said that this concern about CT should not be about blaming doctors. He said that Radiologists are always concerned to minimise all risks including radiation risks to patients from ionising imaging examinations;
