This Strand acknowledges the need for an up to date requisite body of knowledge and skills. It encompasses three components:
Medical Expertise
Clinical Judgment
Information management
1.1 Medical Expertise
Definition: The possession and maintenance of the knowledge and procedural skills necessary to conduct the clinical aspects of professional practice.
Level 1 Activities may include:
- Unit Visits
- Audio/ information & Lectures
- Journal Reading
- Self Directed Learning
- Web or DVD-based Learning
- Sabbatical (non-research)
- RANZCR Meetings
- Clinical Meetings
- Attendance at an International or National Meeting
- Attendance at in-house educational meetings or relevant lectures
Level 2 Activities may include:
- Departmental Audit
- Formal Post Graduate Study
- Practical Skills Workshops
- Self Directed Learning
- Self Assessment on Audio/Web/DVD Learning
- Manuscript review for peer-reviewed publications
Level 3 Activities may include:
- Implementation of recommendations (from audit results) and evaluation of the improvements made
- Medline search to solve clinical problem and apply to individual patient care
- Peer reviewed publication

1.2 Clinical Judgment
Definition: The ability to apply knowledge and procedural skills to make an informed, accurate diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment from the range of options available.
Level 1 Activities may include:
- Attendance at Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
Level 2 Activities may include:
- Chairing Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
- Editor, Book
- Committee work for protocol and guideline development
- Clinical Trial
Level 3 Activities may include:
- Trying out a new approach/technique and evaluating the outcomes
- Participation in Peer Review Audit with Feedback

1.3 Information management
This includes having an awareness of and ability to use the range of technologies available both as a user and a provider of information to other professionals and stakeholders
Level 1 Activities may include:
- Attendance at relevant lectures
Level 2 Activities may include:
- Risk Management Activities
Level 3 Activities may include:
- Completion of a Risk Management cycle where an action plan has been developed, implemented and evaluated.
