Radiation Oncology Directors of Training

Each accredited radiation oncology training site has a designated Director of Training (DoT) who is responsible for the structure and quality of training at that site, and for providing trainees with information and feedback on their progress.

The Head of Department has the responsibility to nominate the Director of Training. You can download the DoT nomination Form. The Education Board will receive the nomination and as appropriate, will ratify the nomination after consideration against the Directors of Training Role Description.

Directors of Training are actively selected and have a demonstrated appropriate capability for the role. In general, persons nominated as DoTs should have:

  1. Sufficient experience in clinical practice, to appreciate the wider issues of oncology and radiation oncology, to impart the correct perspective to trainees.
  2. Sufficient seniority in the centre to exert the appropriate leverage and advocacy for trainees.
  3. Sufficient time allocated to fulfil the DOT role.

Whilst a Director of Training has overall responsibility for a training program in a hospital or department, all members of the specialist staff of an approved (accredited) Department or Unit are Clinical Supervisors and have a role to provide oversight, teaching and training for trainees at an appropriate level.

Directors of Training are the RANZCR's representatives of training in Radiation Oncology in accredited departments. They have an important role and must have a broad understanding of, and experience in, RANZCR activities. They provide liaison between Trainees and Hospital authorities regarding matters related to training as well as with Training Network Directors and the central administration of the RANZCR. The role encompasses organisation and management, education and human relations.
