Model Answer and General Feedback – Anatomy 1st Paper
Past Examination Papers 2nd Paper

Examination Format

The Anatomy examination will consist of two 2 hour written papers with the first paper comprising 15 short answer questions, all of which are to be attempted. This paper will be based on gross anatomy but candidates should include aspects of imaging in their answers where appropriate. Where relevant, candidates should use clearly labelled diagrams to supplement their answers.

The second paper will consist of up to 10 questions based on radiographic anatomy. At least five and possibly all questions will be based on sets of images (conventional radiographs, CT, MRI or ultrasound). Candidates will be required to identify numbered structures and to provide a brief explanation of the images. Any questions not based on images will require written and/or diagrammatic accounts of conventional radiographs.

Syllabus

The syllabus includes all aspects of basic or radiographic anatomy which are capable of demonstration by any of the current imaging techniques. A knowledge of developmental anatomy is required to provide an understanding of adult structure and common anomalies of development. The candidate must also be familiar with the radiographic appearance of structures such as bones and joints at various stages of growth. A detailed knowledge of the anatomy of normal pregnancy from conception to post partum period is expected, together with a comprehensive knowledge of sectional anatomy as demonstrated in normal plain radiographs, CT, MRI and ultrasound scans.

In general, the syllabus embraces any aspect of Anatomy, both classical and radiographic, which is capable of demonstration by any current imaging technique. Included are developmental Anatomy, surface Anatomy, functional Anatomy, anatomical basis of patient positioning and cross sectional Anatomy. However, a detailed knowledge of microscopic Anatomy is not required.

The candidate should also have a comprehensive knowledge of the sectional Anatomy of the head, neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis, as demonstrated in normal CT, MRI or Ultrasound scans or in the photographs of body sections.

While attendance at an Anatomy department is believed to be beneficial for Part I candidates, it is not mandatory because of its acknowledged unavailability in some centres. Anatomical dissection is not mandatory.

Recommended Reading List

There are many suitable Anatomy textbooks which candidates may choose to read. Most radiology textbooks have good sections on anatomy. Click here to download a recommended reading list. It is not intended to be comprehensive, nor should it be considered essential reading. Candidates are advised to use this list as a guide only.
