The RANZCR does not have a set quota for training places. The number
of positions available for vocational training is determined by the funding
provided for such training by the various state Health Departments and
the New Zealand Health Authority. For the number of positions available,
please contact the relevant Head of Department or Supervisor of Training.
Universities in Australia and New Zealand are publicly funded institutions
and the majority of accredited training positions are in departments with
some affiliation with medical schools of those universities. As such there
is fierce competition for training places. Selection depends on undergraduate
medical course results, previous interest as demonstrated by radiology
electives, publications or presentations, performance as an intern based
on references and an interview. In certain States, all training is undertaken
in one department while in other States and New Zealand, training is obtained
by rotating between several hospital departments to provide the required
variety of experience and exposure to imaging modalities.
Each department must apply for accreditation by the RANZCR. Accreditation
is based on many factors including medical school affiliation, number
and case mix of examinations and patients, number of consultants (faculty
members), spectrum of clinical departments, teaching program, reference
book and film libraries and access to all imaging modalities. In particular,
each trainee must be guaranteed training in each imaging modality and
training must be obtained under the direct supervision of Specialists
in Radiology recognised by the RANZCR. Initial accreditation includes
a site visit by the Chief Accreditation Officer who makes a recommendation
to the Education Board. Every year the Chief Censor in Radiology must
receive an accreditation report from each training centre if accreditation
is to continue. Branch Education Officers may provide additional information.
Recently the College Council has accepted that certain overseas departments,
private hospitals and private radiology practices may be accredited for
training provided the guidelines laid down by the Education Board are
met.
