Principles of
Training Programs Project
The Education Boards have identified a need to develop a set of principles for the training programs of the College in order to ensure that trainees in different locations can experience a transparent, consistent and well-structured program of training as they move toward Fellowship. Whilst the delivery of the training program occurs in hospitals and private practices, the College has a role in accrediting sites for the delivery of this training and has a responsibility to ensure that trainees have the necessary facilities, resources and support to deliver the educational outcomes required. The project was endorsed by Council at its meeting on 13 August 2004. AMC accreditation: the AMC highlighted a number of issues in relation to the training programs that could be improved and a number of areas where some basic information and guidance could be made available. This included issues such as clarification of the role of the Branch Education Officers, the provision of consistent and equivalent training programs across sites, the issues of rotations, support for trainees, performance appraisal of trainees and program evaluation. University courses: a number of universities offer training courses which assist trainees of the College attain their education requirements. Other universities have expressed interest in such a role. How can the College and universities collaborate to improve the training programs? Curriculum development: the development of more specific curricula for the College's training programs should assist training sites to deliver a program of training which meets the educational needs of the trainee in developing the competencies required for the specialist. The Principles of Training Programs project is an initiative of the Education Boards. It aims to identify a broad set of principles for training programs which should assist their planning and delivery of training programs of the College. It should also provide some basic tools and resources for trainees, Supervisors and Branch Education Officers to clarify and assist them in their roles. The project involves collection of information and opinions from a number
of stakeholder groups including trainees, Supervisors of Training, Heads
of Department, Branch Education Officers and Fellows on the components
and structure of the 'ideal' training program. This information will be
collected in various ways including through surveys and workshops. The
project commences in October with a brief to report back to the Education
Boards in six months. A Working Party is being convened to develop the principles and report back to the Education Boards. There is a Working Party for each of the training programs of the College (Radiology and Radiation Oncology). The Working Party comprises:
