Quality and Accreditation Program

The College has been developing its Quality and Accreditation Program since 1997, with funding assistance from the Department of Health and Ageing, and has developed a set of accreditation standards for diagnostic and interventional radiology.

The program covers the modalities of general radiography, ultrasound, mammography, computerised tomography, interventional radiology, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine and bone mineral densitometry.

The program has been developed in stages in order to facilitate the move towards practice accreditation where previously no such program existed and is jointly administered with the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA).

Under the terms of the Radiology Quality and Outlays MoU, it is proposed that accreditation will become mandatory with appropriate transitional arrangements.

Practice Managers can obtain all the relevant information for the Accreditation of Practices including:

Quality Use of Diagnostic Imaging (QUDI) Program: A program focusing on implementing evidence into practice in radiology in Australia

The QUDI Program is an essential part of the national initiatives to promote quality in the healthcare sector. This program places the consumer at the centre of the process.

The QUDI Program aims to promote the quality use of diagnostic medical imaging services that are:

  • Essential, efficient, effective, safe and affordable procedures for optimal consumer health diagnosis, management and treatment;
  • Informed and determined by evidence based best practice guidelines for referral for diagnosis and treatment;
  • Supportive of consumer choice and empowerment;
  • Delivered by accredited practitioners using evidence based practice guidelines; and
  • Sustainable and viable within the national health system and health budget.
The QUDI Program has four streams of commissioned projects that focus on the needs of the key groups of stakeholders involved in diagnostic imaging in Australia: Patients, Referrers, Radiologists and Funders.

International Radiology Quality Network (IRQN)

The RANZCR quality initiative has extended to the international arena, with the formation of the International Radiology Quality Network (IRQN) in 2001. The network is a collaboration of founding member Colleges and has established a range of short and long term goals.

Unnecessary CT Scans
Dr Matthew Andrews, President of RANZCR has endorsed the concerns raised by Dr Tony Webber, Director of Medicare’s Professional Services Review, about the inappropriate use of CT scans.

However, Dr Andrews said that this concern about CT should not be about blaming doctors. He said that Radiologists are always concerned to minimise all risks including radiation risks to patients from ionising imaging examinations;
