Education Modules for Appropriate Imaging Referrals

This project aims to improve the appropriateness of referrals for medical imaging by influencing how health professionals think about the place of imaging in patient assessment and care. The educational intervention has been designed to be delivered early in the health professional’s career, increasing the likelihood of long term changes in imaging referral practices.  The modules provide detailed explanations of the evidence base, providing the background to, and demonstrating the appropriate use of high quality, evidence-based clinical decision rules (CDRs).  Easy-to-follow flow diagrams integrating the CDRs have also been produced to support their continued use in medical practice, as seen in the RANZCR recommended CDRs booklet.

The major outcome of this project is a suite of stand-alone web-based educational modules (also available in iBook format and as PDFs) that include a set of cases for each of the clinical scenarios, and incorporate the use of evidence-based decision support tools for appropriate referral for imaging, including the following topics:

To view the 10 online modules and other resources, College members can login to the LMS via the Learning Portal icon on the top right corner of this page. Tip: Use the keyword “referrals” in the Search Resources and Search Courses pages on the LMS.

To support the use of the CDRs covered in the Education Modules, RANZCR developed a smartphone app to provide easy access to the decision pathways for clinicians and health care professionals.
The ‘Imaging CDRs’ app is available for free on the App Store and the Google Play store.

In addition, a resource has been developed that documents how the Educational Modules were developed. The iBook version of this resource, Module Development is available for download. The iBook file is zipped and will need to be downloaded to your computer before transferring to your device. This version is compatible only with iPad, iPad mini and any computer with a MacOS and iBook capability. Alternatively download the print version to read on other devices.
