Mammography Quality Assurance Program

The Mammography Quality Assurance Program (MQAP) provides medical imaging practices with an established, voluntary, quality assurance program of activity for diagnostic mammography to support the provision of consistent, high quality mammography services. The program focuses on the quality of images produced, which are the means by which clinicians determine the need for further investigation of a patient's breast symptom. The Mammography Quality Assurance Program has been declared under Commonwealth Qualified Privilege.

Participation is open to private medical imaging practices, medical imaging departments of public and private hospitals, and the RANZCR Fellowship. The program has been in operation for nearly 20 years, and now provides quality assurance assessment for screen film and digital mammography sites. The MQAP is a sister program to the BreastScreen Australia Accreditation Program.

Quality control and quality assurance testing requirements are documented in the Mammography Quality Control Manual, which is available for purchase from the College. These are supplemented by the RANZCR Guidelines for Quality Control Testing for Digital (CR & DR) Mammography for CR/DR sites (see resources list below).

Diagnostic mammography services are required to participate in the MQAP in order to meet the RANZCR Standards of Practice for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.

MQAP Cycle

The MQAP operates on a three-year cycle and provides assessment of both CR/DR and screen film mammography services. Where a CR system is introduced to an existing MQAP service, this is considered by the MQAP to be equivalent to introducing a replacement unit. Participation is machine-specific and sites operating more than one mammography machine will need to make an application for each machine.

  • First year: Practice undergoes accreditation of a new unit (or reaccreditation of a current unit)
Requirements include the assessment of clinical and physics materials by expert mammography radiologists and mammography accredited medical physicists.
  • Second year: 1st Annual Review
Mammography accredited physicists assess the quality control data submitted by the site.
  • Third year: 2nd Annual Review
Mammography accredited physicists assess the quality control data submitted by the site.

Fees

The MQAP application fee is, from 1 July 2015, AU$880.00 (incl.GST) per three-year cycle. This is payable upon making an application to participate in the MQAP.
