RANZCR Quality Programs - Overview

The College's commitment to quality is enshrined in its mission to set, promote and continuously improve the standards of training and practice in diagnostic and interventional radiology and radiation oncology in Australia and New Zealand.

Overview of RANZCR Quality Programs

The College's commitment to quality, continuous improvement and best practice is generally reflected in all areas of College activity. The College has progressed its quality agenda through a range of initiatives. More recently, under the auspices of the Radiology Quality and Outlays Memorandum of Understanding, the College has initiated the adoption of a long term, strategic and systematic approach that expands on the College's existing activities and commitment to quality improvement through the establishment of a Quality Use of Diagnostic Imaging Program (QUDI) Program.

Quality and Accreditation Program

Since 1997 The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) has been developing a Quality and Accreditation Program for medical imaging practices in Australia.

The ultimate aim of the program is the development of minimum standards of accreditation for all modalities of medical imaging, including diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, diagnostic mammography, computed tomography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging.

A voluntary accreditation scheme, jointly administered by The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) and the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), commenced in May 2004, and is open to all diagnostic imaging providers that wish to apply.

A mandatory accreditation scheme may be introduced in the future for all practices that fall within the scope of the Radiology Quality and Outlays Memorandum of Understanding. As limited professional / technical resources will result in some practices not being able to be accredited before the introduction of the mandatory scheme, transitional arrangements will be necessary.

International Radiology Quality Network (IRQN)

The IRQN network was established in 2002 to promote quality in radiology through collaboration, experience sharing and mutual assistance.

Diagnostic Imaging Quality and Outlays Memoranda of Understanding

The 2003-2008 Radiology and Obstetric & Gynaecological Ultrasound Quality and Outlays Memoranda of Understanding, include a commitment by all parties to the MoUs, including the RANZCR, to develop a quality framework to support best practice across the full range of diagnostic imaging services.

The quality component within each agreement requires the respective management committees to develop quality programs.

Quality Use of Diagnostic Imaging (QUDI) Program

The RANZCR has been contracted by the Department of Health and Ageing (DHA) to develop and implement a strategy for the Quality Use of Diagnostic Imaging (QUDI) under the strategic direction of the Radiology Quality and Outlays Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) 2003-2008.

Radiation Treatment Services Quality Program

The members of the Tripartite Committee; the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, the Australian Institute of Radiography and the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine are developing standards for radiation treatment services, with funding support from the Department of Health and Ageing (DHA).
