Message to future applicants from the College Grant Sub-Committee

Message to future applicants from the College Grant Sub-Committee
For a suitable application the Grant Sub-Committee suggests the following:

  1. The primary applicant should be a Fellow, Educational Affiliate or Student Member of the RANZCR.
  2. When the primary applicant is a student member of the RANZCR, a Fellow of the RANZCR should also be listed as accepting some responsibility for supervising the primary applicant.
  3. Applications should be submitted in the required format. In preparing an application, the primary applicant is encouraged to obtain information and guidance from other researchers in their particular institution and often in another specialty who have experience in preparing applications for other research bodies such as the NH&MRC.
  4. The primary applicant should ask their local supervisor to review the application and in particular, the local member of the Education Board should not sign the application if he/she believes its preparation is inadequate.
  5. It is important that the application should provide adequate information under all headings but of particular importance to the assessors is "Methods", "Results" and "Budget".
  6. The Radiology Research Committee of the RANZCR believe that the prime purpose of the RANZCR Research Grants is to provide research experience for Fellows, Educational Affiliates and Student Members of the RANZCR. Therefore it is important for the primary applicant to identify the fact that he/she will have significant input into the actual project rather than simply relying on a non-member of the RANZCR to in fact do most of the "work".
  7. Although the primary applicant should be a Fellow, Educational Affiliate or Student Member of the RANZCR, such applicants are encouraged to undertake collaborative studies with other specialties as it is difficult for a "stand alone" project to be developed. A good example is the extensive collaboration that members of the Department of Radiology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital have with the Department of Neurology in the same institution.
  8. On completion of a project supported by the RANZCR Research Fund, the primary applicant is required to submit a manuscript within six months for consideration for publication in Australasian Radiology. If the primary applicant and his/her collaborators believe that it would be more appropriate for the manuscript to be submitted to another journal for publication, a request should be made to the Editor-in-Chief of Australasian Radiology who, after discussion with the appropriate Associate Editor, may agree with this proposal but again the manuscript should be submitted for publication within six months of completion of the project.
  9. From 2006, applications will only be considered if they are in the correct format as in the past, a number of applications have been unsuccessful because of inadequate preparation including limited detail of "Methods" and "Results" and in particular, justification of the budget. From 2006, unsuccessful applicants will be given constructive feedback by a member of the Grant Sub-Committee and a report will be provided to the Radiology Research Committee of the RANZCR.
