Overseas Trained Doctors - Australia

Australia – Overseas Trained Doctors

There are two different pathways available for Overseas Trained Specialists (OTS) who wish to have their specialist qualifications recognized in Australia:

  • The assessment for specialist recognition of OTS qualifications, and
  • The process for assessing OTS qualifications and experience for an Area of Need position.

In each case, applications must be submitted to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) as the agency for handling such applications on behalf of the state and territory medical registration boards.

Overseas Trained Specialists

The state and territory medical boards have agreed to accept overseas trained specialists who are assessed and recognized by Australian or (Australian and New Zealand) specialist medical colleges for registration to practise in their field of specialization.

The purpose of the specialist assessment is to determine the comparability of training, qualifications and experience of overseas trained specialists, with Australian trained specialists.  The application process is administered by the AMC, but assessment of the applicant’s training and experience is undertaken by the relevant specialist medical College. Registration requirements differ in Australia and New Zealand.

Eligibility for Fellowship

There are a number of pathways towards Fellowship that are available for overseas trained specialists, depending on the assessment undertaken for specialist recognition. More

Area of Need Specialists

The Area of Need (AoN) process aims to meet gaps in radiology service delivery, primarily in rural and remote areas, due to the inability of employers, whether in the public or private sectors, to attract locally trained specialists into positions. More

Occupational Training Visas

Occupational Training Visas (OTVs) are available from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and allow overseas trained doctors to get training in radiology and radiation oncology in short-term positions in Australian hospitals (usually of 12 - 24 months duration). More
