International Medical Graduates - Australia

There are two different pathways available for International Medical Graduates (IMG) who wish to have their specialist qualifications recognized in Australia:

  • The assessment for specialist recognition of overseas qualifications for comparability, and
  • The process for assessing specialist qualifications and experience for an Area of Need position.

In each case, applications must be submitted to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) as the agency for handling such applications on behalf of the state and territory medical registration boards.

By national agreement, all jurisdictions have introduced consistent assessment and registration pathways for IMGs in addition to the existing Australian Medical Council examination pathway.

Details of the pathways can be found at the Australian Medical Council website, please click here.

Specialist Recognition Assessment

The state and territory medical boards have agreed to accept international medical graduates who are assessed and recognized by Australian or (Australian and New Zealand) specialist medical colleges for registration to practise in their field of specialization.

The purpose of the specialist assessment is to determine the comparability of training, qualifications and experience of international medical graduates with Australian trained specialists.  The application process is administered by the AMC, but assessment of the applicant’s training and experience is undertaken by the relevant specialist medical College. More

Registration requirements differ in Australia and New Zealand.
