Quality Use of Diagnostic Imaging (QUDI) Program: - A program focusing on implementing evidence into practice in radiology in Australia

The QUDI Program aims to promote the quality use of diagnostic medical imaging services that are:

  • Essential, efficient, effective, safe and affordable procedures for optimal consumer health diagnosis, management and treatment;
  • Informed and determined by evidence based best practice guidelines for referral for diagnosis and treatment;
  • Supportive of consumer choice and empowerment;
  • Delivered by accredited practitioners using evidence based practice guidelines; and
  • Sustainable and viable within the national health system and health budget.

The QUDI Program is a four year research and development program in quality and safety in diagnostic imaging. With planning and development work undertaken in 2004, the commissioning of individual projects commenced in early 2005.

In this relatively short period of time, a broad vision of the promotion of high quality diagnostic imaging and their appropriate use has been translated into an established program with a clear framework and well defined implementation strategies.  As a result of the careful planning and construction of the QUDI Program, a number of high quality projects focussing on diagnostic imaging and addressing quality issues from consumer, economic, referrer and radiologist perspectives have been commissioned.

The QUDI Program has four streams of commissioned projects that focus on the needs of the key groups of stakeholders involved in the provision of Diagnostic Imaging Services for the Australian community.  Projects within these streams are designed to be incremental, collaborative, evidence based and coordinated as appropriate.

A number of Committees have been convened to oversee the management and reporting of the program, develop annual work plans, and provide expert advice to the program manager and project teams.
